Viiroqua NewsThe Bush administration has denied federal aid to areas of Vernon County that were damaged by tornados this August 18th. However, Bush does promise to restore Trent Lott's beach house.

"Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house -- he's lost his entire house -- there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch."

    -- George W. Bush, Sept. 2

Viiroqua NewsViroqua City Council has passed a recommendation which will provide Walgreens with approximately $600,000 in tax assistance to make infrastructure improvements in order to site a new Walgreens store next to the Viroqual Food Coop.

Alderman Vernie Smith cast the only dissenting vote and the measure passed, 7-1.

This is the most blatantly uninformed misuse of public money I can think of. Don't let people tell you that there is no givaway. Tax breaks are real money. You and I and the schools will make up the difference. I can think of many development projects that are more deserving of public dollars than a new Walgreens. What...., they can't afford to build it without public assistance. How dumb are we and so what if they don't.

    You tell'em Vernie.

Viiroqua NewsSpent some hours this weekend pulling garlic mustard plants from a hillside. Only found one 10 x 10 patch in an area where the electric company cut down some of my trees last year. Still pissed about that. Anyhow, my friend in the DNR pointed out the garlic mustard. Said if I don't keep after it and eradicate it, I'll lose the whole virgin hillside in 5 years. This is the spam of plantlife.

    General News

I have visited this web page several times in the past, and I agree with comments made concerning the great potential that a community web page can have. I want to encourage the hosts of this site as well as those who happen by; keep up the good work!

I live a little way out of Viroqua, but I have visited the town in the past. Sometimes, I was passing through but on other occasions, I attended Christian concerts at the High School or I bought seed from Nelson’s Ag. I laughed each time I drove past the Sign for the ‘body shop’ next to the funeral home, and I wondered whether it was displayed purposefully with a wry sense of humor or just because.

    Viroqua is a beautiful place.

With the advent of the internet, Viroqua is more than just a small town on the way to La Crosse; it is a part of the global community. As testimony, the counter at the bottom of the home page is counting the cost of the war in Iraq. What a price in dollars!

Have you thought about that? Maybe you have, but have you also considered the price in human suffering? If you have a loved one in the military I suppose you have.

As the days pass, and the number of human beings who: die, lose loved ones, are maimed, raped and scared for life continues to grow... how can we ever measure that? I grew up in the 1960’s with stories about the deaths of my uncles in WWII. I remember Kim Phuc – The Girl in the Picture- running naked and burned down the road, the Killing fields of Cambodia in the 1970’s and 80’s and then Welcome to Sarajevo in the 1990’s. Other wars have gone on as well, and I am sure the citizens of Viroqua have paid their share of this price along with the rest of humanity. Have we gotten what we have paid for?

I do not believe we have. I just began reading the book, “First they Killed My Father” by Loung Ung concerning the Cambodian war. I would like to begin a dialog with anyone else who is familiar with this writing or who would like to consider how a person from a small town might impact the world they live in.

Green Home Show Seems Fitting Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Viiroqua NewsThe 1st annual Green Home show will take place this weekend at the Public Market @ Main Street Station. "Green", simply meaning living in harmony with the Earth , in a manner as healthy for both human and Earth as possible. It really is logical, when you think about it. Green living can start anytime, and even a bit "green" is better than none at all!

As we started to plan this event, it become more and more clear that this type of show would be very appropriate for the area. Our beloved driftless region has evolved into a Mecca of organic farming and living. Organic Valley and Harmony Valley Farms being two of the more prominent examples from a notoriety, revenue, and respect point of view.

However, even those folks not necessarily into "organic", share with those that do something universal. We all have a deep respect for the earth, and what we can harvest from her to live. We all appreciate the necessary and delicate relationship with the Earth that we humans must sustain. My father-in-law, a former dairy farmer with four generations in the area, told me before there even was organic farming, he basically had the same intense connection to the land, today's organic farmers do. It seems most of us here do not shield ourselves from the Earth, as others do, but rather, allow her to embrace us.

This home show, though in its first year has the potential to draw a regional and maybe eventually a national crowd to the area. The venue is right, the town and land are fitting and the people are ready. Let us together make this one great home show!
